knittingthestash Episode 141: On Trend?
❤️
Thank you! I’m a newbie spin and have two braids in my stash that I was wondering how I’d manage them. Now I’ve got a better idea of how I’d possibly handle them.
I love your dragon! You did such an incredible job on her face, she has the most wonderful expression. I think Puff is a very artistic creation. The new sweater is also lovely, but Puff steals the episode! harpingJanet
I also started with the "Wool Buddies" book! I made almost everyone of the animals and gave them to my kids. And then I stopped making them :( (Since I am back tracking your videos... I Love what you are making on video 161!? ) I am inspired again with the swivel head on your raccoon! I didn't know they made something that makes their head swivel. I thought the giraffe was hard enough on "Wool Buddies"! Also, I have never double knitted and I think I might try. There is a really cool Harry Potter scarf out on Ravelry. Just wondering if you have dabbled in that? EEK! Looks really hard. 🤨 Thank you for all you do in the knitting world. I have learned so much!
Would it be possible to film a tutorial of Spencer sewing on a button? My buttons don’t stay on long at all. I have no idea what I’m doing wrong! I am a self-taught sewer.
Here you go: m.ua-cam.com/video/PWgmsjh_kKg/v-deo.html&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Farfajrice.com%2F&feature=emb_imp_woyt
@@knittingthestash Awesome button sewing tutorial!! Thank you Melissa and Spencer!!
you're welcome for the shirt suggestion and I'm so flattered!! this is the best!!
:) I thought you would love it!
Yes. Thanks. We’re going on some trips in June but I really do want to come to the Saturday zooms when we get back.
The dragon turned out very cool. We call imperfections "character" lol...or in the case of building things...places to put trim lol. I see lots of flat felting and smaller felting projects but not much for sculptural felting.
Thanks, Candy! and you are so spot-on about trim . . . it heals (ah hem, hides) all.
Spencer is quite a guy… he wet felts and he kneads dough too. 😂 Great job on your dragon. Looking forward to your next project.
Thanks, Michelle! I hope all is well with you. Maybe we can catch up one of these summer Saturdays :)
Me too on the 1st knit as being a sweater! It was bulky yarn on big needles and I even added big wide stripes to put another color in it! Great job on Puff!
Yes! sweaters first! Thanks, Valerie!
Again (as I said on IG) that dragon is awesome!! I was really curious about the process and construction - it’s a very interesting and beautiful craft… thank you for sharing it with us. The cardigan is so lovely, thanks as always for your insights. In the past I’ve avoided PetiteKnit as she wasn’t size inclusive but lately I’ve seen an improvement in the offerings. I have her Fortune pullover in my queue 🤞🏽. Enjoy the summer ☀️
Thanks, Jill! You're so kind. And yes, I agree about PetiteKnit--so glad to see more inclusion in the sizing. Happy summering to you, too!
Puff is spectacular! And your sweater will go with everything (when it is cold out again! wow, that fabric sounds warm). At the risk of starting an internet argument, I'd say that craft is the (skilled) making of beautiful and/or useful things, art is using a craft to create something that communicates an emotional message. The joy of making doesn't really depend on the classification of the outcome =) I so wish I had time to test knit for the new Shorn! I am in the middle of moving my frail mother across the country into assisted living...hoping there will be many more editions of your yarn in the future.
Hi Wendy! I appreciate your definition, for sure. And I wish we could get you in for the test knit, too. But you have your hands full at the moment!! Safe move to you and your mom :)
Same here when it came to sweater vs. scarf as a first knitting project. Puff is absolutely beautiful. Now, she(?) he(?) would look great as a childrens' book.
Oh, so many great ideas :) Thanks!
@@knittingthestash Forgot to mention. She looks like her name should be "Erica", to me. 😀
I've felted a couple life size witches hats. Also large bowls
OooO so cool! The 3D sculptures are where it's at, I think!
Absolutely gorgeous dragon. Fabulous creative process and I adore the colours. Your podcasts are endlessly entertaining, informative and inspiring. Thanks so much to the Knitting the Stash team!
Thanks so much, Alison!
WOW! The dragon is SO cool! It was a team effort for sure.
Thank you! Yes, team Spencer is a good one :)
Puff is wonderful and hopefully the first of other e-d felting adventures. Surprised you let Big Hot Hands to squeeze the water out of Shorn V
hahah! Sunny, he is a keeper. So great to see you this past Saturday.
Artist or not… you are amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
Aww, thanks.
it's not quite a DRAGON, but i did take a needle-binding class this weekend, and made a very messy pink wrist-warmer -- hoping to learn enough to make ancient-Viking-like mittens...
love it! What a cool class. Can't wait to see photos of your makes. Loved your most recent shawl--beautiful.
Beautiful dragon!!! Here in uk, felting is certainly an established craft now as at yarn and craft fairs there are always minimum of a couple of felting stalls and they are amazing. One person does big pieces to replace shot wall mounted deer heads etc. The cardigan is lovely. Thank you for showing 💕🌿.
Oh cool to know! I definitely feel like the craft is growing here in the states (and maybe I'm just out of touch, so far, with the needle felters!)
What an amazing first time dragon! Well done.
Thank you!
Puff is one gorgeous dragon, Melissa. Do give yourself the credit. A first felt and then this, wohooo.
Thanks so much :) I do love her
Puff is an amazing dragon 🐉🐲💙 Beautiful Copenhagen Cardigan 💙
Thank you!
Cool dragon.
Puff...the magic dragon! I love her. So interesting to see the process. It kind of boggles my mind how you did this.
Thanks, Rose! Super fun . . . just took a lot of time :)
Hi, Melissa. Thank you for your video. Best wishes and Happy the week. ❤
Melissa...Puff is just beautiful. What an accomplishment for your first felted "toy"I hope to see you soon. Debra
Thanks, Debra! Hope to see you soon, too!
Thank you! So clear and informative!
You are so much fun! I loved all of this. But why do you say skeen? Is that a thing in some areas? I’m from Minnesota and now in Oregon and when people say skeen here, we always correct them to say skayn.
I love the dragon wings! I’ve yet to try needle felting but I bought a kit from Going Gnime at Rhinebeck last year. I’d love to see a Gotland/Corriedale blend.
Oh yes, go for it!
Another fun episode! I braided all the ends of a color work sweater and want to felt the end of the braid so I don’t have to knot it. Alas, I’m still waiting on the sweater to dry. Just in time for summer in Central IL!
lol. summer in central IL is humid, no doubt! But at least you'll have a new sweater for the fall :)
I always learn something from your videos! I've only knitted with merino and bfl, so I'd be open to learning about and using any type of wool. Thanks, Melissa!
:)
I hope you're getting him a t shirt that says, "big hot hands"!!!
Done.
The dragons are going to be epic!
Yay! Yes, I hope so :)
I love the felted painting! I can’t wait to see it with your dog in the foreground. I want to try needle felting and received a kit for Christmas and am inspired to give it a try. And I don’t know much about wool breeds, but maybe I would be interested in East coast growers because I worry about the conflict out West with sheep farmers vs wolves and bears. Is that a thing? Can you tell I just watched a documentary on bears in Yellowstone? 😊
Oh interesting. There are so many politics about ranching out west that us East coasters don't always know about. I started reading The Wooly West a little while ago--interesting perspective on the history and poitics.
Hi Melissa, your dragon is wicked cute and inspiring me for yet another wooly bunny hole! sigh! The Pict wool is gorgeous. I would love to see Finn or Tunis or even a Churro! :)
Thanks, Tracy! More bunnies!
Hi Melissa. Your needle felting is so neat. Your pictures look so good and the dragon is quite a project. I didn’t know something like that was possible.
Thanks, Michelle! Neither did I :)
Never tried felted projects, but I’ve always wanted to! Dragons (or Griffins…sp?) have been faves! Almost ready to get Petite Knits “April” cardigan, yarn decision/s next. Not sure about mohair (love a fluffy, but…), possibly a nice & soft wool for the sweater! Made a small cowl a few years ago w Jacob wool. Looked the breed up, they’re so interesting!! I too prefer wider span at underarm. A great spot to add any circumference to a sweater/top, I think! Have fun w dragons! And wool. 😊
Thank you! I hope you enjoy the cardigan--I do love her patterns :)
just saying hello and love the cardigan coming along -- it is lambing season here in Iceland, so i of course am interested in wool blends using Icelandics' unique dual-coat properties... but also realize Icelandics are probably few and far between in New Hampshire! thankfully i'll be going to the annual Icelandic KnitFest in a couple of weeks, so will catch up with all the small-batch work being done here then!
Oh your adventures always sound amazing, Laura! Enjoy the lambs and festivals!
I’m just back from Northern England, where I got to meet producers of single British breed and blended British breed fiber and yarn. What a revelation as to how different yarn and fiber can look and feel. (I also got to see an amazing number of the 72 British sheep breeds. Even Wensleydales!) . I’m thrilled that small producers’ breed specific wool is available in the States, thanks to wool lovers like you who make it so easily available to purchase, without my having to trek to farms and mills I’d never get to. harpingJanet
Thanks so much, Janet! And your adventures sound fabulous!!
I went and looked at the Jacob in your shop. Isn't that lovely! GREAT news about a mill starting we seem to be loosing them faster than they start up. I have heard of 2 in my area in the SE that have closed.
Thanks, Valerie! Yes, so sad to see the mills closing and very happy to have new mills come on the scene!
Love the podcast. I wonder if my husband could make me a drum carder, he is not as handy as Spencer but maybe. I will keep on dreaming. 🤓
Marie, go for it! He might love creating the drum carder . . . you just never know :)
I always add extra stitches to the underarms of sweaters so they fit me better. Love all the aspects of using wool. I sleep on a wool filled pillow made from wool about 10 miles away from me. Great support for neck and back. Thanks for another fun and interesting podcast.
Thanks, Sunny! I'm glad I'm not the only one adding extra stitches :)
I wonder if the one inch underarm might be more usual at the present because of the prevalence of sweaters that use a lot of positive ease. When the side of the sweater is farther away from the body, you can get a lot less 3D with the sweater shape and still not hamper your range of motion when wearing it. I have even done a few sweaters that had *no* stitches added under the arm, which I find absolutely insane, but they were some of those with massive amounts of positive ease intended (which I almost never do for my own garments, because my bust is a bit outsized and if it's big at my bust it's triply large elsewhere.)
Oh! And as for fleeces I'd like to see as yarn - I am really fascinated by the Santa Cruz Island wool I recently spun up. It is the most curiously elastic stuff, very very springy in yarn form after being spongey in carded form. I'd love to try some that was spun up at a mill.
I love this theory. The last two sweaters were not big-easers, but I think in general, you're on to something here, Bekah!
So many wooly things going on! thanks for all the shout outs! or is it "shouts outs"? :) You're the best
Much love to Mr Big Hot Hands
@@knittingthestash hahahahaa
Big hot hands 😂. Warning ⚠️ needle felting/wet felting is addictive & so creative! You’ll want to make all of the things, Melissa & Spencer❣️
haha. true! I can't get enough of it!
I can't wait to see the Dragon finished! So cute! I crocheted one for my daughter a couple years ago and I thought it would take a week or two, but six or seven weeks later she finally got it! I would like to know if there are any recommendations for a dk-ish wool, besides superwash, that is ok to put in a wool setting washer many times. I'm hoping to make the knit picks blanket that you finished a couple of years ago, with all of the color changing yarn. So I just need some blackish yarn next.
Oh yes, crocheted dragons are AWESOME!! As for wool, I've heard that the down breeds are good for socks (and perhaps blankets) because they do not felt as easily as other wools. Might be worth a look!
Hi Melissa, love your dragon. Can’t wait to see the final product. I love a soft, yet strong fiber. I like Romney, Cormo, merino, targhee, fine shetland. Will picked Wool be at the MA sheep and wool festival next weekend? I will be there and look for them
Hi Pat! I hope you had fun at the MA sheep and wool fest. I'm not sure about Pict Wool's festival schedule, but you could always message Bel--she's super fun to chat with :)
Loving the dragons and how the wings are working up. We have a dragon collection but not the woolie kind...yet. Needle felting is too dangerous a sport for my fingers. I have 'scrub' felted scarves and hats with silk trims. Those skeins are beautiful...each and every one of them. I do love our local Merinos, BFLs and just about anythig that is fluffy and soft. So many things can be done with wool. Thanks agian for the great catch up.
Thanks so much! I did manage to stab myself with the felting needles, but only twice . . . trying to be more careful . . .
Melissa, I love listening to your yarn/knitting adventures! You have so much gumption to dive into new experiments with fibre creations that it always gives me inspiration to try yet another new adventure.... and I've been an avid knitter for over 30 years!
Thanks so much :)
